Don't ask me about Kujovic - Prosecutor-General
13:56 Wed 27 Feb 2008 - Petar Kostadinov

Persecutor-General Boris Velchev refused to comment on February 27 on the latest row in the so-called "Kujovic affair", which centres around Montenegrin-born alleged drug trafficker Budimir Kujovic.

“Don't ask me about Kujovic,” Velchev told reporters on his way to the weekly meeting of the Supreme Judicial Council. “I am not commenting on what other people have said on the issue. There is a pre-trial investigation going on and when it is over there will be more information on Kujovic,” he said.

The case took a new turn on February 24, after Interior Minister Roumen Petkov told private broadcaster Nova Televizia that Kujovic was granted a legal stay in Bulgaria in 1997 by the head of National Security Service (NSS) at the time, Atanas Atanasov. Atanasov is currently a member of Parliament from right-wing opposition party Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria and is one of Petkov's most outspoken critics. In 1997, Kujovic was granted a temporary, and later long-term, residence permit by the NSS, Petkov said.

The Kujovic affair broke out last December, when he was arrested by the police in Plovdiv. His paperwork was in order, even though he had been banned from entering the country. The row about Kujovic's Bulgarian ID led to the resignation of Interior Ministry's chief secretary Iliya Iliev.

Speaking on Bulgarian National Television on February 27 Atanasov said that he was being victimised by Petkov. “On February 24, I had a conversation with a colleague of mine to set up an ad-hoc committee in Parliament to investigate a trip Petkov made to Monaco last November. I guess our conversation must have been taped by the police and this is what I get,” Atanasov said.

He claimed that Petkov, together with Regional Development Minister Assen Gagauzov and Defence Minister Vesselin Bliznakov, went to Monaco at the expense of the Bulgarian Motorcycle Federation (BMF) to attend the FIM Off-Road Awards ceremony. Afterwards, BMF got 3.6 million leva from the budget surplus for developing its activities from, which Atanassov directly linked to the trip made by the ministers to Monaco. On Nova Televisia Petkov refused to comment on Atanasov's words and labelled the accusations ridiculous”.

Bulgaria won two awards at the FIM ceremony, as best organiser for the Motocross Grand Prix at Sevlievo and the SuperMoto Grand Prix at Pleven. Petkov was on the organising committee of both events.
