DOCTORS IN BULGARIA REFUSE TO TREAT AIDS PATIENTS- REPORT
09:05 Thu 17 Aug 2006

Most HIV-positive Bulgarians lacked personal doctor, head of the Bulgarian foundation for aiding HIV/AIDS patients Pavel Malinov said.

A project of the foundation carried out between November 2005 and June 2006 aimed to establish the degree to which AIDS patients in Bulgaria were denied they basic treatment rights, Darik Radio reported.

Bulgaria has 646 registered HIV-positive people. In the end of last year the number reached 597 people. Each month 10 new HIV cases are registered in the country, the analysis shows.

Most of the AIDS patients that took part in the survey said that their main problem was finding medical aid out of the specialised HIV/AIDS centres in the country.

Medics denied AIDS patients treatment on several occasions. The main reason was the lack of isolation room, which is needed according to law. Such developments forced patients to hide the fact they were HIV-positive.

Surveyed people also said social care, legal advice and psychological counseling were below the needed level.
