Disappointing Lokomotiv Sofia out of Uefa Cup

Lokomotiv Sofia football club failed to win the return leg in the second qualifying round of Uefa Cup tournament on August 26 2008 against Serbia's Borac Čačak and ended its participation in the tournament after a 1-1 draw.

The first game in Serbia on August 14 ended with a 1-0 win for Borac and Lokomotiv had to at least win by the same result to go to extra time. The team almost succeeded in doing that after Dimo Atanasov scored an early goal for the Bulgarians in the 18th minute.

Then came the moment which changed the match. In the 35th minute, Norwegian referee Svein Oddvar Moen gave a penalty for Borac, which was highly contested by the Bulgarians. Boban Stojanovic had little problems and the result was levelled.

From now on Lokomotiv had to score at least two more goals in order to advance to the first round of the tournament proper. Borac, on the other hand, had the easier task of defending the score.

In the end, despite Lokomotiv's overwhelming superiority, Borac managed to pull through and keep the score at 2-1 on aggregate.

Talking to Bulgarian National Television at the end of the match, the Serbian coach of Lokomotiv Dragomir Okuka said that the "referee's mistakes are one thing, but when you can't take advantage of the goal opportunities you create you will always be punished by the opponent. The visiting team simply surprised us".

Indeed, when Lokomotiv first heard the name of Borac, few expected that it will prove a worthy opponent for it had almost no history in Uefa tournaments. Lokomotiv, on the other hand, has played more than 50 matches in Europe and two years ago became the first Bulgarian team to notch eight consecutive wins in the Uefa Cup.

On August 26, this proved not enough and Lokomotiv dropped out of the tournament leaving only Levski Sofia, Litex Lovech and Cherno More Varna as Bulgaria's representatives in Uefa's tournaments this year.

Levski will play its second game against Belarus' BATE Borisov in the third qualifying round of Uefa's Champions League on August 26 in Belarus.

Levksi lost its first game against BATE 0-1 and will hope for better luck against BATE if it is to reach the group stage of the tournament.

Litex will also be the vistors in their second game from the second qualifying round of Uefa Cup tournament. On August 28, Litex will play against Israel's Kiryat Shmona after the first game on August 14 ended in a goalless draw.

Cherno More will entertain another Israel team, Maccabi Netanya, on August 28 after the two teams played out a 1-1 draw on August 14 in Israel.
