DEFENCE MINISTRY INVESTIGATES BULGARIAN TROOPS IN IRAQ
09:00 Mon 19 Mar 2007

Bulgarias Defence Ministry is investigating a case of an amateur video showing Bulgarian soldiers insulting Iraqi citizens.

The video was broadcasted online on March 16 2007, Defence Ministry spokesperson Vladislav Prelezov said as quoted by mediapool.bg.

In the video, the soldiers call Iraqi women and children gypsies and make sexual remarks.

The clip was probably recorded in 2004 when Bulgarian troops were operating in the province of Diwania.

The author of the video is unknown, mediapool.bg said.

Defence Minister Vesselin Bliznakov said that he would be firm if the video was authentic. Those who lower the prestige of the Bulgarian army and violate human dignity would be severely punished, he said.

Defence Ministry lacked information on violence or harassment that Iraqis were subjected to by Bulgarian soldiers.
