DECISION ON BULGARIA’S HOME-MADE RAKIYA EXCISE DUTY TAKEN IN OCTOBER
09:04 Fri 22 Jun 2007

Bulgarians should not pay excise duty on their traditions, member of European Parliament (MEP) from Bulgaria Kristian Vigenin said.

Vigenin met European customs and tax policies commissioner Laslo Kovac to discuss the imposition of excise duty on Bulgarian alcoholic drink rakiya.

Vigenin already tabled twice in EP a request for the abolition of the duty on home-made rakiya.

After examining Vigenin's reasoning, Kovac said that he promised to give his suggestion to EP in October, 2007 which will solve the problem with home-made rakiya in Bulgaria.

Vigenin said that he was not going to withdraw his request and hoped to receive political signal from EP now.
