Deaths, injuries in weekend road accidents in Bulgaria

Reckless overtaking was a contributory factor in at least two of a series of serious road accidents in Bulgaria on the weekend of December 26 to 28.

On December 27, three people died in a collision on the Samokov - Borovets road after the driver of a luxury vehicle attempted overtaking on a solid line, crashing into an oncoming bus.

Bulgarian news agency Focus said that the section of the road where the accident took place was blocked for about five hours and traffic was redirected through the village of Beli Iskur.

On December 28, a driver and a passenger were injured after the car in which they were travelling left the road near Sliven, falling into a precipice. Police said that the 32-year-old driver was drunk.

On December 26, four people were injured in a road accident near the village of Mihnevo, according to an Interior Ministry statement. Two cars collided because of incorrect overtaking. The same day, two people died near Aitos when the car in which they were travelling left the road and hit a tree. Police said that the accident was caused by driving at high speed on a slippery road.

Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry said that four Bulgarian citizens were injured when a tourist bus overturned near the Greek village of Metsovo on December 27. All four injured passengers were admitted to hospital in the town of Yanina.

On December 28, the Interior Ministry said that five people had died in road accidents in the previous 24 hours. There were eight car accidents, in which a total of 10 people were injured, one critically. In Sofia, there were two serious and 73 minor car accidents during this time, the ministry said.
 
On December 27, the Interior Ministry said that four people had died and 38 were injured in car accidents overnight in Bulgaria. In Sofia, there were 106 minor car accidents, with one person injured.

Bulgarian National Television reported on December 27 that a driver alleged to have been driving under the influence of liquor, and speeding, had lost control of his car in the village of Satovcha, killing a 12-year-old boy.
