DANUBE OIL SPILL DISPERSES CLOSE TO BULGARIA'S LOM
13:07 Wed 04 Oct 2006

The oil spill that has been floating on the Bulgarian part of the Danube River in the past two days has nearly dispersed in the river part close to Lom.

Several small spills were observed in the middle section of the river, director of the State Agency for Civil Protection in Montana Nikolai Penchev said.

The major spill is expected to reach the Rousse region on October 4. Since the spill already started scattering its density would be decreased two times by the time it reaches Rousse, Bulgarian news agency BTA reported.

Emergency teams had two options for acting in such instances. They could either wait for the spill to move to another region before cleaning the riverbank or to try collecting it by directing the spill to a group of islands located in the river.

The second option could deal with pollution more efficiently, representatives of the civil protection agency said.

People living in the areas close to the river are still advised to avoid using the water and to refrain from fishing.

Initial information said the spill originated in Serbia but the data has not been confirmed yet, BTA reported.
