A 'flamboyant, cross-dressing male' folk singer Azis was among the most recongised people in Bulgaria.
Azis represented Bulgaria alongside local pop singer Mariana Popova at Eurovision song contest in 2006, BBC World Service said.
He is a representative of the most popular music style in the country, a blend of folk with Turkish and Arab rhythms, called chalga.
Chalga was blaring form everywhere in Bulgaria, BBC said. It was often considered 'a low class people' type of music.
Sofia Echo newspaper editor Magdalena Rahn told BBC that „the rhythms are catchy and the voices incredible... At least it's Bulgarian,“ she said.
