On May 7 2008, Bourgas Court of Appeal rejected the appeal against the suspended sentence of the Bulgarian two-time world ice skating champion Maxim Staviski.
Staviski was sentenced to two years and six months suspended sentence in January 2008, with a five-year probation period, for causing the death of a man and seriously injuring a girl in road accident on the Black sea coast on August 5 2007. Staviski was driving under the influence of alcohol.
The Prosecutor's Office appealed the verdict, demanding an effective sentence.
According to the confirmed suspended sentence, issued by the Bourgas regional court, Staviiski also had to pay 180 000 leva of compensation to the parents of the man, who died in the car accident. Interest will be charged to that amount until the moment it is paid out. Staviiski would also pay 4815 leva for material damages, caused by the accident.
The confirmed sentence can be appealed in the next 15 days before the Supreme Court of Cassation.
