The Council of Europe (CE) will decide on the way the name of the EU currency should be spelled in Cyrillic, multilingualism commissioner Leonard Orban said.
The official spelling of the currency is ‘euro’ in all 23 official EU languages, but Bulgaria insists on spelling it ‘evro’, as it is pronounced in Bulgarian.
The European Commission website quoted Orban as saying that Bulgarians have to be aware that in 1995 the CE decided that the name of the EU currency should be ‘euro’ and must be the same in all official EU languages.
Still, the decision of CE allowed “the necessary degree of flexibility in order to accommodate as much as possible the specific characteristics of the different languages.”
Representatives of the European Central Bank will visit Bulgaria in mid-April to discuss with local authorities the official name of the EU currency in Bulgaria.
