Bulgaria can win the fight against corruption only if people want it, US ambassador to Bulgaria John Beyrle said.

According to Beyrle Bulgarians are becoming more demanding and less apathetic when it comes to anti-corruption practices.

Beyrle said that Bulgarian politicians should show will to fight corruption in order to win long-term support.

Corruption caused Bulgaria huge losses, Beyrle said as quoted by mediapool.bg.

Only in 2006 the country lost 900 million leva, due to corruption. The sum was equal to the combined budgets of the Health, Environment and Culture Ministries, he said.

Beyrle said that Bulgaria had to defeat corruption, otherwise it risked losing its international allies.
