CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN BULGARIA DEPENDS ON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
14:14 Wed 28 Feb 2007

Social responsibility of Bulgarian companies depended on economic development, Alpha Research polling agency managing director Boriana Dimitrova said.

Alpha Research carried out the first national research on social responsibility of Bulgarian companies. Research involved 120 medium-sized and large companies.

New companies that entered the Bulgarian market and the development of non-governmental charity organisations will further increase social responsibility, Dimitrova said.

Nearly 52.1 per cent of the companies questioned said that they have spent the largest amount of money to aid orphans. Another 44.6 per cent helped their staff and 32.2 per cent donated to the elderly and to people with disabilities, Bulgarian National Radio reported.

Most companies donated because they wanted to leave something behind. Others wanted to create a positive image of their business.

Research showed that funds companies provided for social initiatives remained below 5 000 leva per year.

Companies preferred direct donations or sponsorship, initiatives connected to the health and qualification of their staff or provision of free products and services.
