CONSTRUCTION IN BANSKO RESORT FROZEN
08:03 Tue 17 Jul 2007

Bansko municipality major Alexander Kravarov has ordered a halt to construction in the famous mountain resort.

The ban covers 28 areas, including the hotel and the villa zones, investor.bg reported.

Construction will remain on hold until detailed zoning plans and street regulations for the areas are completed.

While the ban is in effect, no permits for construction or change in the purpose of the agriculture land would be issued, investor.bg said.

Kravarov’s order is subject to appeal within 14 days.

Deputy mayor Lazar Zahov said that the ban affected new construction. “We have to be aware where and what can be constructed and it has to be in conformity with the infrastructure in the region,” he said, as quoted by Bulgarian news agency BTA.

"Shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted" & "Killing the Goose that lays the Golden Egg" spring to mind. With land sales fallen through the floor, and apartment sales non existent as investors take their money elsewhere, it would appear the Bansko bubble has well and truly burst. I take it from this announcement that there must be an mayoral election due as I can see no other reason for such a pointless statement. This should have been in place 2 years ago before Bansko was raped and pillaged to the point where it looks like Sunny Beach in the snow. This was uncontrolled mass building that has completely ruined the town. With most investors now dissapointed with their investment, and new ones leaving without buying, someone should actually investigate exactly what has happened in Bansko and who was involved in allowing it to happen.

I agree with Diane. It seems over-development in Bulgaria has begun to regulate itself. Let me be honest, I am an eco-tourist and I will gladly pay a premium NOT to stay in over-developed areas like Sunny Beach and Bansko. The main problem is that this over-development has been based heavily on speculation (money as usual). This has and will cause irreversible damage to BG's environment and a valuable source of income.

I Still think Bansko would prove to be a very good buy in years the infrastructure would improve and should be a world class skiing destination!!! (I hope)
