Bulgarian politicians have the will to accept changes to the constitution by the end of March, Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev said during a press conference in Sofia.
A dialogue between the parliamentary majority and opposition formations would produce the needed compromise in a timely period, Stanishev said. Opposition parties presented some good ideas on which additional consultations will take place, the Bulgarian National Radio reported.
Stanishev said a balance should be achieved concerning the political immunity of MPs. Opposition parties demand the complete removal of the protection against court proceedings for MPs and judicial magistrates.
Constitutional changes in Bulgaria are needed as a part of the attempt to implement effective reforms, related to the country’s EU accession. Changes are needed to fight corruption, as well as for a more efficient re-structuring of the legal sector.
