COMBINED TRANSPORT THE FUTURE OF BULGARIA'S RAILWAYS
14:48 Wed 14 Feb 2007

Combined transportation is the priority of the Bulgarian State Railways, head of Central freight service division Pencho Popov told a conference on February 14.

Combined transport is significant for the national transport strategy in view of the European Union, which also gives priority to that kind of transport, Popov said as quoted by Focus news agency.

The large number of vehicles passing trough the territory of Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece could boost the development of the combined automobile and railway transport, Popov said.

Combined transport will reduce traffic and the number of road accidents as well as liquid fuel and energy expenditure. In this way the harmful influence on the environment will be also taken down.

Transit transport services is another aim of the state railways, Popov said. The lack of terminals in the country is the main reason for which the company focuses on that kind of service.

As a result of the increase of prices by 40 per cent and the large number of thefts in Romania,
the clients prefer to travel across Serbia.
