Change of places?
19:12 Tue 22 Apr 2008 - Petar Kostadinov

Speculations in Bulgarian media have already made former interior minister Roumen Petkov the floor leader of Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP)in Parliament.

On April 22 2008 Bulgarian daily Dnevnik quoted sources from BSP Petkov was going to change place with Mihail Mikov, the current BSP floor leader.

On April 22 the Government media office said that Mikov will become Interior Minister in Petkov's place. Petkov resigned on April 13.

According to Dnevnik, the change of places was going to become official on April 24 after Parliament would approve the changes announced by the Cabinet on April 22.

Petkov resigned from office following immense public pressure after his public confession that he had met people under investigation in his capacity as minister.

BSP has previously appointed former ministers to positions in Parliament.

In May 2007 Roumen Ovcharov resigned from the post of economy and energy minister following a scandal involving the then head of National Investigative Service, Angel Alexandrov, and Hristo Lachev, head of state-owned tobacco producer Bulgartbak.

The three accused each other of blackmailing but nothing was proven. After his resignation, Ovcharov became chairman of Parliament's budget committee. Petar Dimitrov, former head of the committee, became Ovcharov's successor.
