CHAMBAO CHILLS OUT AT BULGARIA'S PLOVDIV SUMMER THEATRE
16:55 Thu 12 Jul 2007 - Stephanie Gilardi

Candles and incense burned on the edge of stage at the newly renovated open-air Summer Theatre in Plovdiv on July 11, setting the mood for Chambao, a chill out flamenco group from Malaga, Spain.

The band's name means 'beach hut' in Spanish. According to the band's website, a “chambao” is not just a temporary space set up on the seashore with a bonfire, but a place where "the simple joy of being alive is the important matter."

The audience experienced this joy when diminutive singer LaMari commanded the stage with her powerful voice.

Fans clapped and sang along to hits such as Como el Agua, Pokito a poko and Ahi estas tu.

During the show, LaMari thanked the crowd in Bulgarian, and addressed them in English until she was prompted by enthusiastic shouts of "en español!" to switch to her native language.

The show was part of the Nescafe Frappe Flamenco Summer Tour, and was Chambao's second performance in Bulgaria. The band has established a small but loyal fan base in Bulgaria

since the group played for the first time in September 2006 at Sofia's National Palace of Culture (NDK).

The group will perform on July 12 and 13, in Sozopol and Varna, respectively.
