Certain political circles were trying to turn the issue with the speakers in the capital's Banya Bashi mosque into an ethnic conflict, Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov said.
Darik Radio quoted Borissov as saying that parties should refrain from trying to gain political support through ethnic issues as this was 'dangerous'. He refused to name the political organisations trying to 'disturb the ethnic peace'.
Recently Borissov requested the mosque to turn down the volume of the speakers as the broadcast used for summoning Muslims for prayer was too loud and disturbed the citizens living nearby. Sofia municipality received several complaints, Darik said.
Ultra-nationalist movement Ataka started a campaign requesting all citizens opposing the loud volume to put their names in a signature list.
