The taxes on cars in Sofia in 2008 will remain the same as in 2007, municipality spokesperson Tsvetelina Krusteva told The Sofia Echo on April 1.

A new tax was proposed during the discussion of Sofia Budget 2008 but Sofia regional governor Todor Modev appealed against it in court.
 
After a discussion between Ministry of Finance, National Revenue Agency, Sofia municipality and Modev, the officials decided to withdraw the proposal for the new tax, as there was already a court case against it, Krusteva said. As a result of this, the way the car tax is calculated remains the same as in 2007.

According to the Sofia local taxes ordinance, voted by the council on March 6, the tax on cars that are five to 10 years old would rise by 30 per cent, and a 60 per cent increase was levied on vehicles older than 10 years.

But because Sofia's municipal council did not observe the February 29 deadline for announcing the new local taxes rates and delayed publishing the new rates by a week, the taxes were subject to appeal in court.
