09:04 Wed 18 Apr 2007

Representatives of the Sofia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) requested a meeting with President Georgi Purvanov to discuss corruption.

SCCI asked for the meeting after Purvanov said that Bulgarian society suffered from the deficit of ideas and politicians were stuck in discussions of minor issues.

The volume of public procurement in Bulgaria reached three billion euro, making the issue major, SCCI said as quoted by Bulgarian National Radio.

Data of the Commission for the Protection of Competition (CPC) shows that irregularities occurred in nearly 30 per cent of the public procurement tenders.

According to the Bulgarian Industrial Association (BIA), nearly 70 per cent of the companies had problems with some of the public procurement procedures.

Bribes reach a value of nearly 270 million leva according to some sources, the SCCI letter to Purvanov said.

SCCI suggests that all parties involved in corruption schemes are forces to pay fines and cover the damages incurred.
