
US president George W. Bush arrived in Bulgaria’s capital of Sofia on June 10. His visit to Bulgaria is the final part of Bush’s European trip.
Bush’s trip is the second official visit of US head of state to Bulgaria. President Bill Clinton traveled to Bulgaria in 1999.
Bulgarian president Georgi Purvanov visited the US in October 2005.
During his European trip, Bush met officials in the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy and Albania. He also took part in the G8 summit in Germany.
On June 11 Bush will meet Purvanov and Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev.
Economic co-operation and US investment in Bulgaria, energy security, visa-free travel between the two countries and the trial of the five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death for intentional HIV infection in Libya feature among the topics of discussion.
Defence co-operation, Bulgaria’s NATO membership and bilateral political relations will also come under discussion. Regional topics, like the status of Kosovo are also on the agenda.
