BULGARIANS KNOW LITTLE ABOUT JOINT MILITARY BASES DEAL
11:02 Fri 13 Oct 2006

Bulgarians were poorly informed about the Bulgarian-American agreement on shared military bases and equipment in Bulgaria, a BBSS Gallup International survey has found, according to Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).

Only seven per cent of Bulgarians polled knew the locations of the bases that Bulgaria and the US had agreed on, the poll said.

Three to four per cent of Bulgarians knew only vaguely what size the US contingent in Bulgaria would be.

Only two per cent knew that the bases would be under Bulgarian command, the poll said, as quoted by BNR.

According to experts, Bulgarians were poorly informed because they lacked interest in the matter and retained stereotypes formed during the Cold War.

The media is reporting the fact that Bulgarians are poorly informed of something!! Perhaps the media should shoulder the blame and not the government. The duty of the press is to inform the public, therefore it is clear that the media has failed in its duty. What about the EU! My experience is that the population here know next to nothing about the Union, its institutions, regulations, laws, or powers. Perhaps the press should do something about this - especially as there is Euro 20 million available from the union to finance public awareness in Bulgaria. Perhaps your article should be headlined " Press and Media Successful in limiting public awareness of important matters" Sofia Echo leads the way in naming obscure towns and villages with no reference as to where they may be. Policy of never printing maps or graphics a great success in confusing our readers"! or better still " Sofia Echo champions new language of 'Bulglish'" - english words with bulgarian grammar written by Bulgarians, make the echo the best source of humour for english speaking community. Policy of not using native english speakers a fantastic success.
