Six Bulgarians and four Greek citizens were detained for a human trafficking attempt in Greece, Australian news.com.au reported.
Police detained the 10 while they were trying to sell a 20-day old Bulgarian baby to a Greek couple. The people behind the trafficking attempt were about to receive 15 000 euro for the infant.
The publication reports this arrest comes in a time when Bulgaria is trying to prove it can counter organised crime and enter the EU in the beginning of 2007. The European Commission already warned Bulgarian authorities stricter anti-crime measures should be imposed.
Greek police also detained two Bulgarian women with a one-month old baby. According to police information the women were about to attempt selling the infant.
Police in Greece and Bulgaria said organisers of trafficking channels offer poor women loans. In case the loan is not repaid, the women are forced to offer their child for adoption abroad, the Australian online publication reported.
Earlier this month Greek police arrested Bulgarians attempting to sell another child.
Bulgaria received EU warning the country’s accession will be postponed if anti-human trafficking measures are not strictly implemented.
