10:43 Mon 29 Oct 2007

Bulgarian teachers and the strike committee will announce on October 29 their position on the proposal for an agreement with the Eduction Ministry, Dnevnik daily said.

The proposal was reached after negotiations on October 26.

Under the proposal, as of November 1, the average salary of teachers would be increased with 80 leva and become 524 leva, while the average salary for non-teaching staff would be 283 leva. These salaries would include differential payments and a 13th month.

In the first half of 2008, the teachers' salary would be increased to 650 leva, while start salaries for teachers would go from 299 to 450 leva.

The proposal further includes agreements about delegating budgets to schools, private classes and school-leaving exams.

Education Minister Daniel Vulchev expressed his hope on October 26, that teachers would go back to classes on October 30 if the agreement could be signed the day before.

Teachers have been on an effective strike since September 24.
