The prosecution has proposed that no person in Bulgaria should be protected from trial on the basis of political immunity. This will apply to all judges, and not only prosecutors, said Deputy Prosecutor-General Mitio Markov. In this way, he countered a National Movement Simeon II (NMSII) proposal to retain the immunity of judges, Sega daily reported.
Markov said that the question of the immunity of the President, Members of Parliament and Constitutional Court judges should also be discussed. Judicial reforms cannot take place without such measures. A number of political parties are against the proposal, including Ivan Kostov's Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB). Kostov said that the weakness of Bulgaria's judicial system came from within, particularly from the prosecution. In addition, on Saturday a representative of the European Commission said that Bulgaria had 10 more weeks to demonstrate specific results in the fight against organised crime and corruption.
