BULGARIAN PROSECUTION LACKS COURAGE - PROSECUTOR-GENERAL
12:03 Thu 27 Sep 2007

Bulgaria's Prosecutor-General Boris Velchev complained on September 26 2007 about the lack of courage in Bulgarian prosecution.

Reason was the mistake public prosecutor Ivan Stanev made in the case against Maxim Staviiski.

On August 5 2007, Staviiski caused a car accident in which one person died, one is still in coma and two others were wounded.
Initially Stanev accused Staviiski only of causing severe physical harm.

"I cannot explain why we keep continuing this inertia, to not acknowledge mistakes when we make them, but instead to try and cover them up and to pretend they are not serious. This is something I do not accept," Velchev said as quoted by mediapool.bg.

According to him, Bulgarian public prosecutors cover each other and they try to keep each other from being harmed by mistakes made.

"This instinct leads to anonymity in the prosecution. Criticism of the prosecution in the Staviiski case was justifiable, because of the lack of professionalism," Velchev said. "Attempts to cover up the mistakes outraged me. The prosecution should leave its anonymity behind and start being personally responsible."

Velchev categorically denied that head of regional prosecution Angel Angelov was responsible. According to Velchev, Angelov "rightfully" administratively reprimanded Stanev.
