
On April 24 2008, Parliament approved the changes to the Cabinet announced by Bulgaria's ruling coalition two days earlier.
The leaderships of the three ruling parties, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), the National Movement for Stability and Progress (NMSP) and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) decided to replace four ministers.
As of April 24 the Interior Minister is Mihail Mikov, BSP floor leader in Parliament. He replaced Roumen Petkov, who resigned from office on April 13.
Former Stara Zagora mayor Evgenii Zhelev replaced Radoslav Gaidarski as Health Minister. Nikolai Tsonev, head of Defence Ministry's Social Activities Agency, is the new Defence Minister. He replaced Vesselin Bliznakov.
The new Agriculture Minister is Valeri Tsekov who replaced Nihat Kabil.
Parliament approved the creation of a new cabinet position, that of deputy prime minister without portfolio who will personally supervise and control the spending of European Union funds. Bulgaria's current ambassador in Germany, Meglena Plougchieva, was approved as the holder of this post.
Furthermore MPs approved the change of the names of two of the current ministries.
The name of the Disaster Management Ministry was changed to the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Agriculture Ministry was changed to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
The changes mean that Bulgaria now has four deputy prime ministers: Ivailo Kalfin who is Foreign Affairs Minister from the quota of the BSP, Education Minister Daniel Vulchev from the NMSP, Emel Etem, Minister of Emergency Situations, from the MRF, and Plougchieva, a former member of the BSP.
