Bulgarian morning TV sound bites May 20 2008
12:01 Tue 20 May 2008 - Elitsa Savova

"I do not accept the approach of some media to publish on the first page that the malfeasances in the National Road Infrastructure Fund exceeded 200 million leva," the former head of the fund, Vesselin Georgiev told private channel bTV. “The word 'malfeasance' suggests that the money was stolen or misused, which I categorically disagree with," Georgiev said.

“In Bulgaria the media and the opposition are issuing the sentences,” according to Georgiev. “Indeed, it is possible that there were administrative violations,” Georgiev said, adding that he had signed 30 000 documents during his time at the helm of the fund. However, another seven people would sign the same paperwork afterwards, he said.

General Vassil Vassilev, head of the Bulgarian Football Union’s committee for order and stadium security, commented for Nova TV on the case of Locomotiv Plovdiv fans attacking CSKA fans at the Vihren-CSKA match played on the last day of the season.

“Let’s face it, everything happens with money,” he said on the measures needed to be taken against football hooliganism. If needed, football matches would be put on hold until stadiums are refurbished to prevent such occurences in the future. He also argued for a "name and shame" policy" "Let us not hide behind the personal data protection law and put the pictures and the names of the football hooligans on the walls of the stadiums."

Gathering registered football hooligans for lections in the time of the matches and imposition of temporary bans for leaving the country when the football teams played abroad were another measures that could be taken, according to Vassilev.

“I can categorically say that the salaries leave behind inflation and this difference is much greater in the private sector,” Economy and Energy Minister Petar Dimitrov told Bulgarian National Television.

“It is normal that the expectations are big, but you should know that prices in Bulgaria are the lowest in the European Union. It is inevitable that the prices in Bulgaria move towards the European”.

“Probably the pensioners are in the worst condition,” he said. That was why the Cabinet increased the pensions twice in 2007, but “it is still not enough for a decent life.”

“We have the highest economic growth in Europe and investments make up 21 per cent of the GDP. That allows the Cabinet to focus on the more severe problems in the country,” the minister also said.

Business climate in Bulgaria was the second best in Europe, surpassed only by Denmark, according to Dimitrov. Concering the rumours alleging liquidity problems at First Investment Bank:“It was a three-day miracle and it’s better that we don’t deal with it anymore,” he said.
