The Justice and Interior ministries will present in the coming months reports on reform progress achieved on EU engagements. Reports will be given to the European Commission, as well representatives of the 25 member-states. The agreement surfaced after a meeting of Justice Minister Georgi Petkanov and Interior Minister Roumen Petkov with European Commission vice-president and justice and security commissioner Franco Frattini. Frattinis two-day visit to Bulgaria ended yesterday.
For the first time, Bulgaria is presenting complete reports on the progress in the fight against organised crime and corruption, Frattini said. Every two or three months the information will be updated so that Europe will be able to exercise constant monitoring over the country. Frattini demanded the initiation of more trials for high-level administrative corruption. He recommended the removal of all factors aiding or sustaining organised crime in the country. The selection of a new Prosecutor-General might provide some additional means for combating crime, Frattini said. Constitutional changes are also a positive development. Frattini received confirmation reforms will be accepted by the end of March, Dnevnik newspaper reported.
