BULGARIAN GENERALS EXCHANGE CONSPIRACY ACCUSATIONS
10:04 Wed 10 Oct 2007

The competition between the left candidate for Sofia mayor Brigo Asparouhov and the second-term runner in the elections, Boiko Borissov, turned into a constant exchange of accusations, with the two now blaming each other for taking part in conspiracies, mediapool.bg said on October 9.

On October 8, Borissov made a statement, saying that 15 days earlier Asparouhov approached him and asked to take any position in Borissovs party Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (CEDB). Asparouhov immediately denied.
On October 9, Borissov changed his version by saying that the meeting took place before Asparouhov was picked by his own Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) as the candidate for the elections in Sofia.

Asked by mediapool, Asparouhov said he could not remember when the last formal or informal meeting between him and Borissov took place. He denied having any aspirations for becoming a CEDB official and said that no such thought has ever even crossed his mind. I am a BSP member and will continue to be one, Asparouhov said.

He called on Borissov to show proof, if there was any, of the accusations made earlier. Asparouhov said that without proof the whole story was shifting into the field of conspirative arguments.

He said he prophecised Borissovs behaviour. A man who hides and lies about his past would lie also for his future, Asparouhov said. He added that Borissov was behaving like a coward, which was not in the spirit of the latters attempt to show himself as a macho man.

The attack on Borissov was backed also by the former deputy finance minister and now a candidate for a municipal councillor for BSP, Georgi Kadiev. He was quoted as saying that a thug is still a thug, even when wrapped in cellophane, alluding to Borissovs carrier as a bodyguard.
Kadiev, whom Borissov called a jerk, said he would not sue for offence because it was beneath his dignity.
