BULGARIAN DISCRIMINATION COMMISSION AGENDA
12:19 Thu 01 Nov 2007

The commission for the protection from discrimination is due on November 1 to review five complaints against the Krasna Poliana – Sofia municipality, sources from the Commission told BTA news agency.

The cases have all been on tip-offs from the Roma foundation Romani Bach that children from the Roma-inhabited neighbourhood have not been included in the list for mandatory pre-school education. According to Romani Bach, the reason behind this was a discriminatory policy in education by the local administrative unit Krasna Poliana and the managerial teams of the schools in the region.

The Roma school in Fakulteta is the 75th primary school Todor Kableshkov. Romani Bach representatives said it has insufficient capacity to offer education to all children in the neighbourhood. As a result, about 100 children have been off the school's list.

The Commission is also due to review a complaint lodged by the Roma information agency Defacto against BBT television. Charges are that the National Guard programme with anchor Boyan Rasate aired on May 7 this year had manipulated the public into assuming Roma-aversive attitudes.
