BULGARIAN CUSTOMS OFFICERS ASK FOR SMALL BRIBES- REPORT
08:17 Thu 30 Nov 2006

Bulgarian customs officers usually asked for 10 to 50 euro bribes, National Border Police Service director Krasimir Petrov said as quoted by mediapool.bg.

Most often the victims of their blackmailing are the people living in Bulgaria with irregular documents.

Nine customs officers were fired since the beginning of 2007 because of malfeasance, Petrov said. Another 19 were transferred to other jobs.

Bulgaria was ready to be EU's external border, Petrov said. Bulgarian custom officers were preparing to work in the new conditions from January 1 2007.

The number of police officers willing to work at the Bulgarian-Romanian and Bulgarian-Greek borders after the country's EU accession went down twice, medaipool.bg said. The officers would be transferred to other border checkpoints.
