Bulgarian shooter Antoaneta Boneva, aged 22, who tested positive for cocaine less than a month before the Beijing Olympics took the lie detector at the Interior Ministry upon her own request on June 28 2008, Bulgarian Sport Shooting Federation said.
The detector proved she did not lie when she said that she has never taken cocaine. Boneva was tested in a tournament in Italy earlier this year and her first sample tested positive for cocaine, which would automatically disqualify her from participating in the Olympics, held on August 8-24.
On July 1, she told commercial broadcaster bTV that she was willing to take a hair test to prove her innocence. In her defence, Boneva said that she was brought up in a way that would never let her use drug substances such as cocaine.
Boneva was supposed to compete at the 25-metre rapid-fire pistol category, but the Bulgarian Olympic Committee dismissed her from Bulgaria’s Olympic team without waiting for the International Olympic Committee's reaction.
