BULGARIAN AGRICULTURAL ORGANISATIONS DEMAND URGENT MEASURES AGAINST DROUGHT CONSEQUENCES
08:03 Mon 17 Sep 2007

The Bulgarian agriculture organizations' council demanded that the Cabinet should take urgent measures against the consequences of drought Bulgaria experienced in recent months.

The 12 agriculture organisations that took part in a summit said that the droughts reduced grain crops in 2007, in Bulgaria and in the rest of Europe, Focus news agency reported.

Grain reserves for 2006-2007 in the European Union (EU) had decreased from 14 million tons to one million tons, participants in the meeting said.

High grain prices directly influenced farming and that is why the sector needed 25 per cent more subsidies, agricultural organisations said.

Deputy chair of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) agriculture department Martin Ziker supported the demands of the agriculture organisations.
