BULGARIA WILL NOT PROVIDE COMPENSATIONS TO LIBYAN FAMILIES
01:00 Wed 02 Nov 2005

The Bulgarian government is not going to provide financial compensations to the families of infected with HIV children in Libya. Five Bulgarian nurses were sentenced to death for the alleged intentional infection of more than 400 Libyan children with HIV in a Benghazi hospital. Libya already demanded the payment of compensations for a favourable outcome of the trial. Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin said the country will not provide any payment. The statement comes in response to claims that Bulgaria will be asked to donate money for a Libyan charity fund. The nurses are innocent, thus no payment will be made for a favourable verdict, Kalfin said.
At the same time, the leading Arabic newspaper Asharq Al Awsat reported that Libya might abolish its death sentence soon. In this way the country will find an easy solution to the Bulgarian nurses case. Libya's Supreme Court will pronounce the final verdict on November 15. Bulgaria has the support of the EU and US, both demanding the release of the nurses, mediapool.bg reported.
