Bulgaria vs Russia at the Olympics

Tue, Aug 19 2008 13:28 CET byPetar Kostadinov 133 Views

Bulgaria's volleyball team will play against Russia in the quarterfinal of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games volleyball tournament on August 20 2008. The match will be broadcast live on Bulgarian National Television at 5am, Sofia time.

Russia finished second in pool B after losing to Poland in their final match and the draw paired them against Bulgarians, who were third in their qualifying pool. Poland, on the other hand, will play against favourites from Italy, who have won two silvers and one bronze in the last three men's indoor Olympic tournaments.

The other two pairs are Brazil vs China and US vs Serbia.

Of the two European teams, Poland seemed to have been the better choice for the Bulgarian side, which has an extremely poor record against the Russians, with just one victory against them in the past six years, which came in November last year in the World Cup. Bulgaria won the tightly-contested match 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-12).

Currently, Russia is ranked second in the world volleyball rankings with Brazil on top. Bulgaria is fourth.

Bulgaria has scored three wins and two losses at the Beijing Olympics. The team won its games against China, Japan and Venezuela and registered losses against Italy and the US, which came in the absence of team captain Plamen Konstantinov, temporarily suspended by the head of Bulgaria's volleyball federation Dancho Lazarov on suspicions of doping. Konstantinov returned for the final match against Venezuela after taking a leave to go to Sofia and take a new batch of tests, which were negative.
