BULGARIA TO UNDERTAKE ANTI-CRIME MEASURES, FOREIGN MINISTER SAYS
16:08 Thu 02 Feb 2006

Bulgaria is considering new measures against organised crime and corruption not only because of the European Commission criticism, Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin said. Bulgaria needs more decisive action against criminal activities.

Political immunity and changes to the constitution should also be considered carefully, Kalfin said. Politicians and magistrates should be responsible for their actions. Thus, immunity needs to protect only freedom of speech, the Bulgarian National Radio reported.

Currently MPs enjoy complete political immunity preventing the initiation of court actions against them. The prosecution can demand the removal of political immunity only in cases of grave criminal offences.
