Bulgaria will explore options for the re-opening of Kozloduy nuclear power plant units three and four without reviewing the closure treaty, Economy and Energy Minister Roumen Ovcharov said.
According to the conditions for the accession of Bulgaria to the EU, if difficulties in the economy arise related to energy production, Bulgaria has the right to apply for corrective measures.
During a meeting in Brussels, Ovcharov said that Bulgaria will keep its EU-related commitments but at the same time disagreed with the reasoning that reactors were shut down due to safety reasons.
"The EU has assumed commitments in the energy field in respect of the Balkan countries, and some of them are already experiencing serious problems with energy supplies, and others expect such problems in the summer," Ovcharov said as quoting by Bulgarian news agency BTA.
Because of these energy problems Bulgaria will try to make use in the conditions featured in its accession treaty, Ovcharov said.
In case reactor re-opening was impossible, Bulgaria would demand larger compensation for the closure, Ovcharov said.
