The European Commission (EC) might offer Bulgaria the European healthcare commissioner post, if a healthcare directorate-general was created, Focus news agency reported.
The EC will have to appoint European commissioners from Bulgaria and Romania after the two countries enter the EU on January 1 2007. The EC has not yet decided the duties with which to entrust the new commissioners.
The National Movement Simeon II, part of Bulgaria's ruling coalition, nominated European Integration Minister Meglena Kouneva for the country's European commissioner on October 2.
On September 26, the EC began a discussion on healthcare services provided to the common EU market and patients' access to such services, Focus said.
The EC is considering the opportunity to create a healthcare directorate-general. Curently, the Health and Consumer Protection commissioner is in charge of healthcare matters.
