BULGARIA TO JOIN INTERNATIONAL FIGHT AGAINST GLOBAL WARMING- CHAKUROV
14:06 Thu 19 Apr 2007

Bulgaria will join the worldwide fight against global warming, Environment and Water Affairs Minister Djevdet Chakurov said.

Chakurov took part in a national conference on climate change and energy efficiency, Bulgarian news agency BTA reported.

Chakurov said that the country will contribute to countering global warming by investing in renewable energy sources (RES). So far Bulgarian electricity production from RES is six per cent and is planned to reach 10 to 12 per cent in the period from 2010 to 2011.

EU requirements for members’ energy policy call for a 20 per cent increase of electricity production from RES by 2020.

Chakurov said that Bulgaria has already taken the engagement to cut greenhouse gas emissions by eight per cent through the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The Kyoto Protocol now covers more than 160 countries globally.
