BULGARIA TO IMPOSE FINES FOR VOTE SELLING
09:04 Wed 26 Jul 2006

Each person, offering votes for sale in the upcoming presidential elections would have to pay a 300 leva fine.

Members of Parliament approved the sanction on second reading of changes to presidential elections regulations, Darik Radio reported.

Another change that MPs approved would introduce integral ballot for the presidential elections. The names of all candidates would be presented in one list from which voters would have to make their selection.

National Movement Simeon II (NMSII) suggested special ballot templates for people with disabilities but the suggestion was rejected.

Members of Parliament also turned down the proposal of ultra-nationalist movement Ataka for compulsory voting.  According to the majority such suggestions countered the Constitution.

Further changes to electoral laws proposed by NMSII and the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) would be discussed as well.
