09:16 Wed 26 Apr 2006

Bulgarian officials need to give permission for the initiation of military operations on Bulgarian territory, Bulgaria's Ambassador to NATO Lyubomir Ivanov said.

His statement comes in response to publications in foreign media, reporting that US troops would have the right to launch attacks on third countries from Bulgarias territory, without asking for national permission.

US troops in Bulgaria will comply with some regulations, Ivanov said. The agreement to be signed this week will ensure Bulgarias national interest is taken into consideration, Darik radio reported.

Bulgaria and the US are expected to sign the final agreement during the visit of US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice in the end of the week. Rice will attend an informal NATO summit in Sofia on April 27 and 28.

Nationalist movement Ataka threatened to rally in front of the National Palace of Culture, where the summit will take place, BGNES news agency reported.

Last week Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov banned political demonstrations in front of the National Palace of Culture.

Ataka leader Volen Siderov said no law forbids such demonstrations and the rally will take place
