While Europe is considering measures to prevent a bird flu pandemic, Bulgarian authorities cannot agree whether to set up a crisis headquarters. Last night, the European Commission confirmed the first case of bird flu in Romania. Bulgaria will set up a crisis committee if EU experts testing the virus found in Romania conclude that it affects humans as well. The situation is developing rapidly, but a state of emergency should not yet be declared, said Agriculture and Forestry Minister Nihat Kabil. Bulgaria will follow European regulations and will co-operate with EU institutions, examining the issue, Kabil said. Later, Health Minister Radoslav Gaidarski said that Bulgaria had a de facto crisis headquarters which was already functioning. Experts were assisting the ministries of health, agriculture and environment, Gaidarski said. Bulgaria was considering a number of specific measures if bird flu is detected in the country, mediapool.bg reported. The administration has found funds for the purchase of vaccines, if necessary. Flu vaccines, however, expire quickly and will be bought only if cases are identified within Bulgaria. The standard flu vaccination can prove helpful and is recommended to all, Gaidarski said.
