08:05 Fri 03 Aug 2007

Renowned Bulgarian footballer and FC Barcelona legend Hristo Stoichkov has been given the Golden Foot career award in Monte Carlo on September 3 2007.

Stoichkov would also leave his footprint on the Champions Promenade, the international football Walk of Fame, goldenfoot.com reported.

The forward was a member of FC Barcelona’s Dream Team, coached by Johan Cruijff. The team won four consecutive Liga titles in the 1990s, and in 1992 took home the first Champions League trophy in the history of the Catalan club.

In 1990 Stoitchkov scored 38 goals with the CSKA Sofia shirt and gained the Golden Boot as the best striker in Europe, goldenfoot.com said.

In 1994, as captain of Bulgaria’s national team, Stoichkov led his squad to fourth place in the World Cup in the US and was awarded the France Magazine's Ballon d'Or.

Prince Albert II of Monaco will attend the award ceremony.

To the Editor Congratulations to Hristo Stoichkov for being awarded with such prestigous prizes as a great footballer! However, he, being born and raised in Bulgaria, must also be "awarded" persona non grata status for our country, because of his arrogant, ignorant, neglectful verbalsims addressing our Bulgaria (as he recently said in an interview published in magazine MAX also other media). It is evident that Hrsito Stoichkov learned mostly machism from the Spanish culture. Calm down, Stoichkov. Please, re-think and ask for excuse. Otherwise, you are persona non grata for Bulgarians, indeed! Dr George Chaldakov Burgas-Varna
