BULGARIA'S RULING PARTY SEARCHES FOR NEW FILE DE-CLASSIFICATION STRATEGY
13:20 Fri 26 May 2006

The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) considers proposing within three months changes to the laws defining de-classification of former State Security public files.

Darik Radio quoted BSP MP Evtim Kostadinov saying the party would propose setting up a public commission giving information on politicians with previous records. Other possibilities include allowing politicians and magistrates decide for themselves whether to reveal the information contained in their dossiers.

For years the Bulgarian government has been working on making the classified files public, but active measures started only last month. The information contained in the files will shed light on cases of corruption and political prosecutions during the communist era and the first years after the transition.

The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) MP Ahmed Yussein said he wanted a public debate on dossier opening. He requested a commission including repression victims, media representatives and former State Security officials to decide upon the problematic areas. Yussein said he had doubts the files have been falsified while Ivan Kostov was prime minister.

On May 31 Interior Minister Roumen Petkov will present the ministry's position on the dossier de-classification. Petkov said that the Cabinet members were not involved in any way in the former State Security but the ministry was still inspecting other politicians outside the government.
