BULGARIA'S RULING PARTY CRITICISES DOSSIER OPENING
09:10 Tue 23 May 2006

The decision of Interior Minister Roumen Petkov to open previously classified files is wrong, member of the parliamentary security and social order committee Georgi Iurukov said.

European regulations for the protection of personal data, for access to public information and for classified information regulate clearly such activities, Iurukov said. Petkov was probably misled in making new decisions, Iurukov said.

A number of other Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) members also said Petkovs decision was wrong, Novinar newspaper reported.

The issue should be examined in its entirety and only certain aspects have been considered so far, MP Boiko Radoev said.

Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev said the dossier topic contained a certain amount of poison. The documents that have been de-classified contained information about events that occurred over 30 years ago and that nobody was interested in any longer, Stanishev said.

In Spain and Greece dossiers from past regimes have been destroyed, Stanishev said. Stanishev said he would like to get expertise on the prospects of destroying former state security files.
