09:08 Mon 30 Oct 2006

Leaders of the three parties that are members of the ruling coalition said they were confident about the results of the second elections round and the re-election of President Georgi Purvanov.

At the same time representatives of the right wing opposition said they were uncertain whether they were going to vote at all, Dnevnik newspaper reported.

In the second round of elections Purvanov faced ultra-nationalist movement Ataka leader Volen Siderov. Exit polls showed that Purvanov received the support of nearly 80 per cent of the voters.

Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev said, after casting a ballot, that European institutions followed the elections closely as these were going to demonstrate the predominant attitude in the country.

Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) leader Ahmed Dogan said that he voted for the stability of the country. Bulgaria needed modern nationalism in the European sense of the word, said Dogan.

Right-wing candidate Nedelcho Beronov failed gathering enough support to continue to the second round of the elections. Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) leader Petar Stoyanov and Union of Free Democrats (UFD) leader Stefan Sofianski refrained from voting in the second round.
