With almost half of 2008 gone, the number of road accidents in Bulgaria was 3503, taking the lives of 433 people and injuring 4376. The statistics reported by the Ministry of Interior do not include the two people, who died in a car accident on the early morning of June 27 on Hemus highway on the road to Varna. Six people were injured by the same car accident, private broadcaster bTV reported.
Since the beginning of June, 613 road accidents happened in Bulgaria, killing 73 people and injuring 766, including 63 whose lives are still danger.
Despite periodic public campaigns to promote safe driving and endless news bulletins filled with images of car wreckages, the statistics show little change from the same period of last year. In January-June 2007 the number of accidents on Bulgarian roads was 3667, with 452 people dead and 4458 injured. In June 2007 along, the number of road accidents was 674.
