BULGARIA'S RIGHTIST PARTIES DIVIDED OVER TWO PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATIONS
10:31 Thu 13 Jul 2006

Constitutional Court Chairman Nedelcho Beronov, one of the suggested candidates for a single right-wing presidential nomination, said that he refused to participate in the elections without the full support of all rightist parties.

Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) nominated Beronov. Rightist parties have been attempting for months to select a single nomination to unite the electorate and increase chances for electoral victory in the autumn.

Beronov refused to take part in competition with other nominees like Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) Leader Petar Stoyanov, Focus news agency reported.

On July 12 Union of Free Democrats (UFD) leader Stefan Sofianski said that the party supported Stoyanov's candidature. Sofianski said that Beronov was also 'an honourable candidate' and called for preliminary elections within the rightist circles.

Since the public support determined whether the nominees could unite the electorate, preliminary elections were important for the negotiation process. UFD supported Stoyanov as at present he had the greatest potential to be elected, Sofianski added.
