BULGARIAS RIGHT WING FAILS IN SELECTING PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE AGAIN
09:00 Thu 20 Jul 2006

The first meeting of the leaders of all parliamentary represented rightist parties ended without success in the selection of a common presidential candidate.

Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) leader Ivan Kostov refused to enter the room where the summit took place together with the leaders of other parties, Dnevnik newspaper reported.

After nearly two hours of talks Kostov was the first to leave.

Leader of the Democratic Party Aleksander Pramatarski said that a common candidate could not be selected as parties were unwilling to compromise.

Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) leader Petar Stoyanov said he was one of the suggested candidates. Several days ago Stoyanov said it would be difficult for him to unite rightist formations in Bulgaria.

DSB suggested the nomination of Nedelcho Beronov. Beronov said he would accept the selection only if he received the support of all rightist formations.

Participants in the talks said that an opinion poll could also be used for the selection of the common candidate. Pramatarski, however, said such idea was never suggested and media information was wrong.
